In Ukraine, tech workers at Respeecher hastened their efforts to use James Earl Jones’s legendary voice for Obi-Wan Kenobi. Known for their previous work with a young Luke Skywalker in Disney+’s “The Book of Boba Fett,” the valiant team were huge fans of the Star Wars Franchise.
Dmytro Bielievtsov, the company’s co-founder, knew they might not make the deadline to Skywalker Sound if Russian troops crossed into Ukraine. So the team scrambled to train the A.I. to replicate Jones’ voice for each scene and edited it together.
Working inside bathrooms and crawlspaces, the technicians used make-shift bomb shelters to continue their development of making Darth Vader sound like James Earl Jones’s voice from 45 years ago. All while the explosions from bombs and rockets smash the surrounding cityscape.
Meanwhile, at Skywalker Sound, Matthew Wood worked with Jones over the decades and said, The work from Respeecher is better than other alternatives.
Darth Vader’s appearance both adored and terrified viewers and continued his chilling presence as the voice of the galactic tyrant. Jones’s family told Wood how satisfied they were with the finished product.
Another job well done.
